A Spade is a Spade

28 05 2010

In western culture we are happy to identify an issue and rip it to shreds, because it is just an issue.

What I am learning is that in other cultures, an issue might be linked to someones identity, and if you rip the issue to shreds, you are ripping them to shreds.

And by trying to personalize an issue to a western culture trivializes the person and the issue.

Over the years, I’ve had a number of ‘cross cultural’ trainings, to help me see through another lense, but I struggle everyday to communicate across cultures.

The way forward for an organization is to have robust corporate policy. The difficulty is getting everyone to understand and buy-in to that policy.
